A war is being waged against Marvel’s Brie Larson by mad fanboys. Marvel took the risk of letting a female actress take the lead as one of its superheroes and this has irked millions of fans. As if ganging up on Marvel’s move, irate fans are expressing their disgust on Youtube, blaming actress Brie Larson for ruining their favorite Marvel franchise, calling for others to reject Captain Marvel. These are getting exposure on Youtube. Search related terms on the platform and you’ll find them on top of the results. To rid itself of this resultant muddle, Youtube had to modify its algorithms to make way for professional sources. Brie Larson is categorized a valuable search term, and it will draw data, videos coming from credible sources such as Variety, and ABC News, with rants from angry fans buried way below the search results.
Like Youtube, Rotten Tomatoes, too, had to change some of its rules to thwart trolls from posting reviews on their site before the movie was released. Of course, now that Captain Marvel is officially out, trolls are ganging up against it. Bad scores have forced it’s aggregate score to drop 50 points. With 58,000 participating reviewers, the movie has already exceeded Avengers: Infinity War reviews. Speaking before an audience at July’s Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards, Brie Larson criticized how film reviews are made mostly by white men, 60% to be more specific. Meanwhile, only 5% of critics consists of colored women; triggering a spew of hatred among many Marvel fans.
Brie highlights the lack of diversity and clarifies that she doesn’t hate “white dudes.” She adds, “I’m just saying we need to be conscious of our bias and do our part to be sure that everyone’s in the room.” But it’s probably too late to appease the fanboys’ wrath. Youtube’s goal is to prioritize credible news sources, but it could also mean that lesser known content creators will have a harder time to get the exposure they need to grow their careers.
